In Mulan, I think most of the characters have a unique and interesting personality. You could write a whole story for each of them, like a spinoff. And Shang well, I think he's got a lot of potential to have a story.
I am particularly interested on his past. How he became a soldier. I am one of the persons who thinks he must have had a rough life growing up.
So what do you guys think?

He was praised by his father for being No 1 of his class. Noone is that good without determination.
HOW he became a soldier actually is no question for me, since he's the son of the General.
Shang makes such a perfect impression in the first Movie. Trained and unreachable. Going by the saying of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" there had to be a pretty hard past.
Didn't you already write a fanfic about that? I haven't read that yet... gonna catch that up ^^

I think Shang may have had a hard past or childhood rather working so hard to please his father you know?

That's true, I should have been more specific. What I intended to say was about the years in military academy and stuff like that. I totally agree with you. Yeah, I have that one. I'm actually in the process of finishing it up, and editing some mistakes in the earlier chapters. If you read it I hope you like it

Sometimes I think his father did love him, but in his own way. Not exactly the kind of man who shows affection by hugs.
I think General Li must have been a very strict father and he wanted Shang to be disciplined and a worthy soldier and leader. Well, and the General worked so hard on making Shang a soldier since a very young age, that he forgot to treat him like a son.
I guess Shang grew up feeling fear to fail his father by not sticking to his standards, and I also think Shang must have idolized his father as a warrior. At least that's how I explain it in my stories. =)
Have you guys ever read The Way of Water and the Long Spell of Rain?? They actually deal alot with Shang's issues with his father, in a really angsty way, but it's really good.
You guys think the General beat Shang, when he was little? Poor thing = S

I haven't read any of those fanfictions yet. I prolly should.
kinda reminds me of our fav-heroine *g*
I never considered this, but now that you mention it... it's actually makes you stronger at certain points - as much as it may break you. "If I can learn the Marital Arts faster, I'll be able to block whatever he is going to try" It's a possible motivation, though I figure that's kinda... bonkers ^^°

The author is Lian Hua. They kinda make an impact on your perspective of the movie, but she made research and she developed their personalities so well, that they're definitely worth reading. They're like I've read them more than five times, and every time I read them I'm like . Some people don't like those fics, because they say that they ruined the Mulan movie for them. In my case, the first time I saw the movie after reading them I was like nooooooo, I can't see some characters the same way, but then I figured it was FANFICTION!!! LOL. Not the movie. And then they're back to normal for me. kinda reminds me of our fav-heroine *g* Yeah definitely. Even if he never beat him, I guess a big part of Shang's emotional baggage is related to an absence of affection during his childhood. I'm working on it. ;D The fic about Shang's past, I started it like ...six years ago...and then I disappeared...and I was having a hard time thinking what was I wanted to write back then. But it's coming along. Hopefully you guys will get to see the results soon.

Araeph's going to rant a little bit, now. Don't mind her.
I don't deny that those fics very well done as far as writing is concerned. The problem is that the characterization is so...Harlequin. It made Mulan's fight against Shan Yu into a minor plot thread against the ballooning romance. However nice the descriptions are, this is essentially the same problem that the Disney sequel had.
And then there's the whole series that she wrote after the two got married. It went from sort-of canonical to not really canonical to a Marty Stu pseudo-historical soap opera of horrific proportions.
The progression went something like this:
a) We're mostly going along with Disney, except that we think Shang is the real main character because he's hott. b) We're making physical attraction the base motivation for the main characters. Frankly, it's just not as interesting any other way. Fa Zhou? Fa Zhou who? c) Even though Shang's the main character now, we really think he should be a jerk 24-7. d) Okay, now Mulan should be wrong about almost everything. e) Hey, let's introduce a Bestest Friend Ever for Shang - Tai Shan! He's awesome. f) While we're at it, let's dispense with Mushu altogether. g) All right, from here on in all of the conflicts in the story will be over some romantic misunderstanding. h) It might be easier if Mulan were made into a cold and distant human being. i) Boy, Tai Shan is soooo awesome! And perfect! And he has unrequited love for Shang! Awwww. j) Yeah, let's try and break up Mulan and Shang's marriage. Ooh, ooh, I know! Mulan will cheat on Shang with a prostitute! k) In case we haven't mentioned it 50 times before, Tai Shan has an angst-ridden and tragic past. And he is married to Shang's sister, while secretly Shang is his true love. l) All right, now Mulan is officially a cold-hearted bitch. m) Have you noticed lately how perfect for Shang Tai Shan is? n) *fake sob* Oh, look at that, Mulan just happened to be killed in battle. *sniffle* What ever will Shang do now oh hi Tai Shan, how's it going? o) "Mulan is Shang's paradise, but Tai Shan is Shang's salvation." Or in other words...Now teh 2 hott menz r 2gether 4 ever!!! Hooray!!!
PotCSues Fanfiction Maxim #12
If your plot requires you to kill off a canon character so that you can pair your original character with the deceased canon character's significant other, you need a new plot. Also, your character is a Mary Sue, no matter how many litmus tests you claim to have taken.

Oh holy shit xD This doesn't sound all too good, but I haven't read them so far, so I don't have the right to judge.
However,
I would have stopped reading at this point anyway and not even faced the... um... Shonen Ai? Oh please don't say it was Yaoi...
