While working on my new fic I kinda got stuck on this issue for a while because... Mushu seems to be really twisted when it comes about his motivation towards war.
On one side he's taking care of Mulan like the hen is guarding her eggs.
On the other side he's forcing the troops forward to the front, while Chi-Fu stated that the men weren't ready yet.
Of course there is not much to give for Chi-Fu's words, but really - Mushu had no time pressure whatsoever (unless Mulan probably just entered her time of the month, though I guess you can strike that idea, since she just came from a bath)
Then again, there is his reaction to the burned down village. Of course he sees it, of course he's sad, but of course he should have seen it coming.
He already HAD a died down guarded one, I don't suppose he was the only soldier to die out of the whole Chinese army. And especially since he failed I think he shouldn't have rushed things so much this time. Of course he had a motivation, but if he gets promoted right away or when the war is over doesn't make a difference - as long as he IS with Mulan he does have his job.
Well, in a way.
I think you can see what I mean by saying that he's rather twisted here.
In the end I actually came to the conclusion that Mushu is merely damn impatient and wants Mulan to kick some Huns before anyone else gets the chance to, but this is really just a vague idea.
What do you guys think about it?
