I had the idea to watch Mulan 2 out of a sudden. I already regret it.
My PC still tried to convince me - he immediately spit the DVD back out once I put it in. But I did not listen.
I have no idea WHO storyboarded Mulan 2, but every character in a single shot is CENTERED. This is an absolute NO GO in Movie editing, did they never hear anything of the Golden Shot? Holy Crap...
Also the Hidden Mickey on Shang's horse died horrible death.
Mulan 2 is really the best example how NOT to do something, in PLOT, ANIMATION and now even CAMERA. I can't judge the cutting yet, but I'm sure there are some errors as well.

Funny how I felt that urge as well. It had been bothering for like a month or so, and I finally saw it last Sunday...and I shouldn't have cause I had the stupid song stuck in my head on Monday...lol at work...trying to give classes with the song in my head. But yeah, watching it reminded me why I don't watch it... My main rant... is that I really dislike how crappy Shang's character turned out (animation-wise, for crying out loud there are scenes in which he doesn't even look Chinese!! And also the damage in his personality...he's just too lovesick...bleh Another thing I hate is the lame plot...I know it's a cartoon and all but how did the problem about forming the alligiance between the Middle Kingdom and Qi Gong was even solved in the end? Everybody living happily ever after? That's even lame for a five year old!! And how much I hate how they turned Mushu into a pseudovillian!!!... I think he learned his lesson on how he should be more selfless in the first movie. Anyways, it had been more than three years since I had seen the sequel completely...I guess I should hold on another 3 years to watch it again.

You know, another thing that I kinda noticed is... the large troops of the first movie marched for apparently a long long time - in Mulan 2 they did a journey into ANOTHER COUNTRY in 3 days only.
Of course they had horses there, but still... it's kinda disturbing.

Wasn't certain where to put this, so I guess here's as good as any place. I might have asked this before, but it could just be my brain at 5AM reminding me of when I first saw Mulan 2 and was talking about it with a friend. I had a thought as to whether or not Mulan mentioned the 'Yao, king of the rock' incedent to Mei? Just tossing it out there, I think it would be hilarious. Honestly hope I'm not repeating myself, what would that say about me? ...thaaaat I think about that scene far too much probably...

Well, if she mentioned it to Mei, wouldn't Mei mention it to Shang to get revenge? And then realize, too late, that that was not a good idea, and run away in time to see Shang explode like a rocket, taking Yao with him? And then Mulan and Mei would both be widows. So sad.

My biggest problem is how Mushu's ego exploded to extreme measures. Any shred of decency and caring died a horrible death.
And are the princess so oblivious that they think normal girls get as much freedom as their song suggests?

I always wonder what bunch of idiots would ruin a perfectly good movie and transform it that pink, fluffy fiasco named Mulan 2. I mean, look at Mushu! He was such a likable character and my personal favorite Disney sidekick but in the second movie he wasn't likable at all. They could have created a million story lines about Mushu dealing with Mulans marriage but ofcourse they had to turn one of the best characters in a jerk. And don't get me started about how everyone acted out of character! I think I'll get some sleep now,I'm getting emotional.

Another thing I noticed, that I kinda have to give them though is... When I checked the credits to see who was responsible for the animation of the characters there was practically NON There was just one big blob called "Animation" (as far as I remember)
So what does that mean, did they just stuff everyone together there or did EVERYONE really animated EVERYONE. That would explain some of the totally messed up scenes if you ask me.

I can't judge the cutting yet, but I'm sure there are some errors as well. Yeah, Levy, you are right about the centered shots. There is a rule when you shot called "Rule of thrids". When you put a image in the center of the frame it would be a picture without dynamism and visualy boaring. I'm a film student and we leant this at the second class of our audiovisual lessons. It's curious how details as the "rule of thirds" and raccord (the hidden mickey's death on Shang horse) may contribute to the film falure. Altough there are many things that didn't work in the sequel. In my opinion, the animation and the plot were the two items that failed. And when your story failure begins with the plot, you are going to fail in everything. It seems that they didn't take the plot writing very serious, and i think they had plenty of time to do it right, but they didn't. I was expecting a better sequel after 7 years. It disapointed me and specially my sister, who is a super fan of Mulan. what can I say about mulan 2? has lame animation and plot. it doesn't follow the original physicological structure of the characters; I mean, they are different people: mushu became an super selfish character who doesn't care about her friend or other people; Mulan suddenly becomes selfish as well, because, when one of the princesses ask her why she joined the army or something like that, she said something about her heart, but, nothing about saving his dad. Well, every single character has a different personality if we compare them with the first film. This was another example of the classic sequel plot. It's a shame that a good film as Mulan had a bad second part. The story had potential but it seems that they wanted to get rid of this film as soon as possible.

Welcome on board worldreader <3 And wheee another film student \o/ That sad thing that irks me here is... DID YOU SEE THAT ALTERNATE OPENING? D8 It's better than the WHOLE MOVIE they came up with, even the characters look MORE in-character in the storyboard than the movie. It saddens me. This movie could have been amazing

I can't judge the cutting yet, but I'm sure there are some errors as well. Ah yes! finally someone thinks the way I do. Honestly, I think everything went by too fast. 3 days to Qui Gong? Way too fast. Only 3 troops? Wow. I understand that the director wanted to get Yao, Ling, and Chein Po to fall in love and marry, but c'mon! Not like this. Even the Score wasn't the same. Jerry Goldsmith did an outstanding job in the first movie (For example "Mulan's Descion") And the whole thing of Mulan and Shang getting married was fine. I always thought they should get married. <3 But they only went out for a MONTH!? Whoa Baby. I know Shang's hot, but c'monnn! Make a year atleast! Speaking of the King of Rome... I SO did not like the role Shang had in Mulan 2. Shang was the type of guy who was almost perfect. He was serious, a perfectionist, always played by the rules. The lovesick part is okay, because well, the man's in love, so it doesn't hurt. But him falling into Mushu's traps? So juvenile for crying out loud! > The animation wasn't the same either. =/ Also I hated the fact that Mushu was so selfish AND that Eddie Murphy wasn't the voice of Mushu for #2. That urked me! This movie needed a BETTER plot, better animations, and to stick with the SAME originality! Not make this a 5 year old playground. Sheesh. I love Mulan and everything, but they SO could have made this movie BETTER. BUT But, but, but. The sequel of Mulan isn't the best, but isn't the worst either. I would prefer my sisters later on to see this than Hannah Montana or some of these new shows Disney does nowadays. Sorry, but Miley Cyrus isn't an example for any kid. -_- The Suite Life isn't so bad, but I can't stand the Jonas Bros. So Mulan 2 is still better than the shows Disney does today. Sorry Disney =/ PS I heard that Mulan 3 is coming out next year?! Whaaaaaaat!

This movie could have been amazing Hi Levy, Yes, I saw the alterantive ending. It´s way better than the whole movie because we can see the characters doing what they have to do- some serious stuff- not like the silly mision of the second film; and, as you said, they are in character. I would have liked to see the alternative scene in the final product. I would have had more action sequences and a stronger plot. Another negative aspect of the film was that the characters were not acting as the historical period in which they lived. When you write a script you have to be careful in details like that. It doesn't mather if is a disney film or not.
