Kay, so I've been wanting to discuss with somebody - ANYBODY - my opinions on Mulan II for such a long time. I'll probably be doing lots of rambling, so bear with me here.
DOWNS:
1. Mulan II reminds me of some sort of fic written by a 12-year-old fangirl. It had no REAL plot, which is okay for a fanfic, but certianly not for a film. It was just a bunch pointless cuddling and lovey-dovey hoo-ha.
2. Everyone seemed SO out of character!
Mulan is tough, much tougher than they portray her to be in the sequal. AND OMG HER VOICE BUGS THE FUDGE OUT ME! It sounds sooo... gah, I dunno, but it's annoying.
Shang just doesn't seem like a real person in Mulan II. I'm not sure what it is, but he doesn't act real.
Ling is the most Out-of-Character of them all. He was funny in the first movie. He's annoying in the second one. He had a real personality in the first movie. He lives to tell bad jokes in the second one.
Mushu was a total jerk in Mulan II. He would never break up Mulan and Shang for such selfish reasons, especially after the first movie. He learned something in the first movie, but in the second one, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
3. Character design was WAAAY off with some of them - Ling especially (which makes me sad, cause he's my favorite). If you compared Ling from the first movie with ling from the second movie, you might notice these differences:
- His head is "longer" in the first film
- His eyes are too slanted in the second film
- Blue is NOT Ling's color
- His hands are WAY WAY WAY off model (this one bugs me the most)
- and I think he might be shorter, but I'm not sure...
4. The Animation is too stretchy. They bend and twist the characters too much.
5. (You'll probably notice this with a lot of strait-to-video sequels) The colors are about twenty times brighter in Mulan II. I don't like that. It takes away the origanal movie's classic feel to it.
6. The "I wanna be like other girls" sequence was annoying. It's a catchy song, I'll give it that, but I didn't like staging of it. The princesses jump about a trillion feet in the air and land on swings. Lame.
7. I don't like the princesses. I just don't.
VERY LONG EXPLAINATION WHY:
In the origanal movie, The Gang of Three sing about their "Girl worth fighting for." They sing about a woman who is pretty as can be, and excellent cook, and a woman who will "marvel at their strength." And guess what, in the second movie, that's exactly what they get.
THE PROBLEM IS, in the first Mulan, they discover that a woman really worth fighting for is nothing like what they sung about. A REAL woman worth fighting for is a strong woman, who has opinions and feelings, not a wind-up doll that will do whatever you say.
8. The voices, though most are the same actor, sound really weird.
9. There wasn't much action.
UPS:
1. The scene where Shang and Mulan are hanging from a broken bridge and Shang slips and plummets to his death... Yeah, I cried.
2. I'm actually kind of glad it was more about the Gang of Three. I wanted to see more of them, and I got to. Now, I wish it was done better, but I'm glad they got some extra attention.
(That's all I can think of for the Ups...)
