18. Rainbow
Mushu!
Tav hurtled over to the dragon who was hunched against a wall. He wasnt responding and seemed to be busy with a metal ring that was tightly wrapped around his already thin wrist. Not until the Irken touched him, Mushu jerked up. Except for the shivering the dragon was perfectly still, his skin though appeared fragile just like it would fall apart at another touch. The way he looked at Tav woke the impression that he had forgotten how to breathe.
Tav? He finally mouthed without a voice. His head tilted and his eyes squinted together, as if he thought it wasnt true.
Am I he realized that there was no sound coming and urged himself a little further. His voice was thin and barely reached the volume of a whisper.
Am I dead?
Normally the dragon had a strong grip upon life and death.
He had lost it.
Tav wanted to say something when she noticed that Mushu tried to stand up.
And he failed at it.
Oh Irk, what had they DONE to him? She would kill them! She would kill them ALL!
The dragon breathed exhaustedly and leaned back against the cold stone wall, his eyes closed.
Is XR not with you?
NO, he is NOT! Tav suddenly burst out, causing the dragon to flinch a little.
Here she came all the way to Merks rescue and all HE cared about was his STUPID AND INFERIOR ROBOT!
HE IS STUPID AND INFERIOR! She repeated by voice for great measure.
STUUUUPID YES! and INFERIO- she stopped abruptly.
Wait! What about the whole deactivation thing? she suddenly asked.
Shouldnt he be dead already?
Horrible, horrible memories streamed through her mind, pictures of stone and dust being revived. And fangs FANGS! Horrible FANGS and voices, THE VOICES!
She pulled on her antennae to make it go away and then glanced down at the dragon who was still, but not yet lifeless.
His eyes opened and glanced up at her questioning.
Tav let go of the antennae and they slowly and smoothly moved upwards again, standing straight, almost tensely.
Tav, he started, as he rubbed on the metal, thinking, contemplating. There were so many things he would have loved to say now. He would have loved to apologize endlessly for this to happen; he would have loved to explain her that he wanted to get rid of this bracelet, to explain her what it was doing to him; he would have loved to tell her how he had tried to escape, but found that she was already gone; how he had wasted too much time searching for her until they had caught and snatched him up again and he couldnt believe that she honestly came back for him.
For all these things he would have required lots of words and he still wasnt the finest speaker after that incident. That horrible incident. If you listened closely he actually had started to lisp.
So instead he said: Be my guardian.
Tav frowned and her antennae twitched.
Dont you mean guarded one? She implied with a tone that Mushu found hard to interpret.
The dragon shook his head no and glanced up at the Irken.
Dont you see where I end up without you?
He completely ignored the fact that it was her fault he was stuck here in first place.
She crossed her arms, tapping her foot with a nod.
Yup.
Because he was inferior.
And dependant on HER. Because she was superior and great.
and he knew that. Because he was smart. Inferior and oh so tiny but smart.
A smug smirk crossed her face.
The dragon didnt notice. He absentmindedly had been fiddling with the bracelet again it was what he had been doing all along. Trying to get rid of it felt like the only thing he was still good for and he failed at even that. The dragon stared into space when the next words came.
It wont change much, he said his words were uncoordinated as if a little kid spoke them that just learned to talk, I wont drag you into the paperwork. I just
He suddenly gripped for Tavs hand, clinging to it weakly. If the Irken hadnt worn gloves she would have noticed that the skin was rough and cold.
But since she didnt notice, Tav settled to rip out of his grasp. It was easy, to her anything was. And besides Mushu wasnt protesting.
Dont worry, she said casually, I will kill them all.
And it would be easy.
The dragon pulled away in an upright sitting position, an eyebrow raised at her.
Was she for real?
And Tav cackled with delight upon what was to come and for seeing the smart dragon she used to know. All the whining just didnt appeal to her. Nope. You just couldnt work with a cry-baby for Irks sake.
When her chuckle had ended Tav turned around and marched off into the corridor.
Poised with adrenaline Mushu jumped to his feet, staring at the blown up door she had disappeared in. He had just discovered that now.
Did he seriously miss something BLOWING UP?
And then the screams already started. The dragons ears perked up and he scurried over to the door, looking left and right. His movements were rusty, but he would get used to it again.
Tav! he called. His untrained voice drowned in the echoes of screams. Due to the resonation Mushu couldnt tell where they were coming from.
It seemed to be everywhere
It felt like a nightmare.
Tav! Leave it! he tried again, but found that he was still overstraining his throat. He went for it in pain, carefully rubbing around his neck.
The dragon froze with a grunt.
This was all the fault of Nos-4-A2. It was always Nos-4-A2s fault. Heck, if someone had stolen Mushus NEWSPAPER it would have been Nos-4-A2s fault!
It was always the fault of the energy-vampire.
XRs fragility, Tavs bite, her attacking him, them ending up in this asylum, his supposed paranoia
He wasnt paranoid.
He had just been doing his job.
They didnt have to trap him like this... in a cell
It wasnt a cell.
But it felt like one. It surely did.
And this, this THING! The dragon slammed his arm against the wall, causing the metal to clang like a gong. It sent shivers down his spine. He clutched at it to stop the vibration and snarled at his distorted reflection. Mushu only remembered scraps of the conversation since he had almost been out-cold when they applied the bracelet to him. It was supposed to enhance his bonding, so that he wouldnt whither away while they were attempting to cure him.
But he was a healthy person.
He did not need to be fixed. He was not broken.
Not yet.
Graved in the thing was an ID, so everyone who found him would snatch him back.
Like a lost pet.
He wasnt a pet either. And he belonged to no one else than XR.
The dragon tilted his head.
And Tav. In a way.
And oh yes, he wanted to find her.
Mushu glanced around the doorframe again. The screams had muted by now. But the SMELL of gore was unmissable now.
When he found her, Tav was standing raised on her PAKlegs in the middle of a room, upon a random person, cackling insane.
Surely insane. SHE was insane, keep HER trapped here instead! Just kidding.
Around the room people had huddled against the wall, some were lying on the floor, dragging huge trails of blood behind.
But all of them were alive, Mushu could smell it, see it, feel it. He could define it again. A certain spark had returned to him and ignited the thing he had believed lost already. But here he was, grasping the life again, yet he found a certain one withering away. The man in the middle, Tav was dealing with, he was still alive. Well, what you could call alive. The Irken just had had too much fun playing with her prey.
Tav the dragon walked over to her, arms spread in a half shrug, What are you doing?
She dropped the half-dead guy and glared down at the guardian.
Oh. Yes. Merk.
What does it look like? she questioned, her voice ever so shrill. It made the people on the wall cringe.
Mushu went silent for a moment and walked over to a particular one of the white coated people. One he remembered. After all he might as well make the best out of this situation.
The guardian fiddled around in the cloak and flatly snarled at the doctor when that one started to protest. Not wanting to attract the interest of the crazy Alien in the center of the room the coat-guy immediately went quiet. Mushu pulled out a key and opened the metal ring, rubbing his released wrist with delight. Sure, it would tear on him. Sure, it might even deactivate him but anything was better than this hell he had been living here.
He then looked over at Tav again.
Lets just get out of here. He was done.
Tav seemed not amused. At all. But
One should leave off with an appetite, the dragon cut her off with a lecturing finger.
The assassin pouted. She had just been having so much FUN!
She rose on her PAKlegs and staggered over to Merk of course she made sure to stab the man on the floor at least once before she arrived at the dragon and lingered high above in the air. While she glanced down from her PAKlegs he looked even more inferior than normally. And he dared to command her around?
Mushu arm-shrugged and then turned to the doctor.
You deserve that. he croaked and pointed up at Tav, Shes the only one being reasonable here!
The Irken smirked at these words and swung rather proudly around, making sure to point out as much blood to the doctor the dragon was talking to as she could. The dried splats covered up the burn-marks she had gotten while playing around a little too enthusiastically in the red liquid. So close to her the smell of smoke around the Irken was actually penetrant.
And soon this smell ought to be everywhere, for this place would go down. Go down in flames!
Her expression turned into a surprised frown when Mushu climbed up on one of her PAKlegs and nested himself upon her PAK.
Let's move it heifer!
Tav tilted her head with a sick smile. The dragon was disgraceful just like always. She pulled out her gun, fired it at the doctor and then left on her PAKlegs, head held high and the dragon piggy-back.
Just so you know, the Irken implied, Im not some inferior cow.
